1st & 2nd Main Capital of Michoacan..

The city of Patzcuaro was inhabited by the indigenous
Purépecha towards the year 1300 after our era.
Since then, along with Tzintzuntzan, front Lake
Pátzcuaro, were the two cultural centers
the region. Upon arrival of the Spaniards towards 1522
(Cristobal de Olid) the last ruler of the Purépecha
region was subjected (Tangaxon II) of Nuño Beltrán
Guzman was looted and destroyed most of the
populated lake.
It was not until the arrival of the "hearers" the father Vasco de  Quiroga or Tata (Father) Vasco in 1537, which changed the treatment
toward natural for this region and he redesigned
political geography of the place, taking at first
Tzintzuntzan and then Patzcuaro as the
Main capital Bishopric of Michoacan (instead of
lakes).
Tata Vasco put into practice the ideas of utopia of
Thomas More, continuing the cultural importance of
Patzcuaro in this lake region around it built
Convents with different foundations - hospitals --
atriums, known locally looking huatáperas
community productions in each specific craft,
taking into Pátzcuaro to the cultural center of the region.

Tzintzuntzan: Hummingbirds place.

Tzintzuntzn, for example, retains its monumental
yácatas (terraces) in front of the lake, the archaeological site that was the main temple - platform of the Purépecha capital in the area. You can also enjoy their handcrafts market outside of the monumental Franciscan atrium, Catholic religious complex of the sixteenth century where we can see: churches, convent, pozas chapels, open chapel, baptismal pool, in coffered (relief in wood), mural painting and syncretic devotion of articulated sculptures (hinged) made in corn cane paste from the sixteenth century.

Other temples are admirable in Patzcuaro like:
Basilica, The Company, the Humilladero, San Francisco,
etc., but his monumental Plaza Vasco de Quiroga is one of the
most beautiful in the country, there can begin a journey
by handicraft shops and restaurants to enjoy in their, the typical cuisine of the Patzcuaro lake area of Michoacan.

Nicholas and the House of Eleven Patios, to discover the
