Tlalpujahua, Magic Town

Near the sanctuary of the Monarch Butterfly lies the magical village of Tlalpujahua, with many Mazahua indigenous. This village rests on an ancient Indian site surrounded by an oak and pine tree forest and it was a very important mining town at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth century (until 1938 the mine was active), today it is a museum.

Tlalpujahua, which means in Mazahua place between rocks, there is a variety of crafts workshops (textiles, ceramics, feather art, etc.), quarry of limestone, typical candies and popular traditions framed in civil and religious monuments like the wonderful parish neo - Baroque (1905 ), decorated with reliefs in ceramic, or the ancient convent and temple of the "Virgen del Carmen" (sixteenth century) buried in 1937 by a landslide of earth.
In December and January, the high production of Christmas decorations made in blown glass, and other ornaments from season can be seen and purchase in the large stores of downtown. Therefore Tlalpujahua has been considered one of the Magic Towns of Mexico Country and a site to visit on a weekend by Nathional Geographic Traveler (November 2008).

Like reference, the city of Morelia is 1:50 hours
from Tlalpujahua and Pátzcuaro 2:45 hours.
